Weaknesses:  Ariel has a very kind heart, and though she is not as naive as she used to be, she will still often let her heart make the choice her head tells her not to.  She is also irrationally protective of those she cares about.  

Personality: When Ariel first joined the knights, she was young.  She was awkward and childish and very bright and bubbly, however the war has changed her, and though she is (no longer) dark and depressed, there is a sort of . . . sadness in her.  She is much wiser now, and she is much more mature and motherly than she was.  She does still have a playful streak, though, and when she gets mad, she gets mad.  Word of advice: don't threaten her friends.  

Backstory:

PRE KOZ:

Ever since Ariel was little, she stood out from her sisters.  Though at first, it was just her fiery red hair.  The hair that both her parents had.  Her sisters, on the other hands, ranged from blondes to brunettes.  This led to rumors being spread about Ariel's mother; that she slept around (merpeople mate like dolphins, okay?) with the mermen of the town.  Why else did she bear so many children who looked nothing like their father?  Except for Ariel, the youngest of the brood.  Well, the rumors didn't bother the family much, as they were only whispered by people who didn't matter.  

That all changed when the humans killed Athena.

Athena wasn't the only mermaid killed that day - many others had perished as well.  It had been a massacre.  That's what led to the law forbidding contact with the surface world.  But at first, Ariel didn't care about that law.  Her family was poisoned that day that Athena died.  

The whispers about Athena grew louder then.  She was dead, what could she do about those whispers?  People spoke freely about what they thought about the "town tart."  Now, Triton didn't deal well with grief, and the rumors only made things worse.  He spent less time with his daughters, doing everything in his power to give his family a respectable name.  And one by one, each of Ariel's sisters started growing apart from each other.  The family was growing apart, and Ariel could only watch.  

Ariel's sisters dealt with this rift in the family in different ways - boys, beauty . . . well, Ariel chose something a bit more extreme.

Adventure.

Perhaps it was the fact that they killed her mother, or perhaps it was the fact that they were forbidden.  But Ariel became fascinated with human beings.  She visited sunken ships whenever she could - which violated the non-human contact law - and took trophies from them, hiding them away in a secret grotto she'd sealed with a spell bought from a vendor.  She made friends this way - a scared but loyal fish called Flounder, a street urchin of a merboy named . . . . well, Urchin, and a mute mergirl named Gabriella (along with her translator, the octopus Ollie) - but she still felt . . . isolated.  The only true companionship she felt was with her cousin, Omar, who was equally outcast due to his strange genetics.  But he lived far away, so she only saw him a little.  

Now, Ariel's father was not pleased by Ariel's little escapades, but the thing that finally did it for him was when Ariel missed the concert he had planned to essentially parade his daughters out in front of everyone.  He decided to send her to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere, so she'd be under constant observation, and would get that "rebellious nonsense" knocked out of her.  Ariel was not pleased about this, but thankfully, her ever-helpful cousin Omar literally handed her a solution: Jesturma, God of the Oceans, was looking for a new bard, and a new messenger for his sea-bound duties.  Ariel had become quite the swimmer - you'd be surprised how many sharks hung around sunken ships - and the constant music lessons she had been forced to go to, plus the singing she did for fun gave her quite the voice.  

Now, when the time for the try-outs came, it was not Jesturma who conducted them, but the high priest of the current Atlantian temple.  And this priest took bribes, it seemed, as he announced that two of the town's most provocative girls had won the positions.  Ariel was devestated - the job had been her only chance of staying in Atlantica - but it was short lived.  

Because there was an unexpected listener.  

Jesturma himself appeared, and he publicly berated the priest for taking bribes, and then promptly fired him before announcing that though everyone did an awful job, he still had to pick someone to fulfill the position, and decided that Ariel was the least terrible of the bunch.  So that was how she got to be Jesturma's bard and messenger.  

Of course, this didn't please her father, as he only thought of the rumors that would circulate because of this, but Ariel didn't care.  He couldn't do anything now; she served Jesturma.  

Working for the god wasn't easy, but Ariel found it fulfilling, and though her employer was cool and distant most of the time, she did not find him to be a cruel master.  But she never found him particularily kind or generous, either.  

Until the day of her eighteenth birthday.  

Ariel had served Jesturma for five years then, and so he decided to mark the occasion by giving her "her payment."  So he gave her voice magical properties.  Ariel was delighted.

Her father was less than enthusiastic.

He was convinced people would think Ariel had been acting as Jesturma's whore - why else would he give her such a lavish gift? - and he ordered her to tell Jesturma to take it back before people heard. But Ariel got angry.  For once things were going right for her, and her father had to crush it.  So she refused.  

And then he disowned her.  

Ariel was distraught.  She never thought her father would go to such an extreme . . . and now she had no family.  She considered going to Omar . . . . but then she steeled herself, and instead went to Jesturma, asking that she be made his knight to fight for him.  

She would prove to her father that she could succeed and bring the family honor.  She'd show him.  


KOZ:

Though Ariel was glad to meet her fellow Water Knights - she got along with Alice right away, and took quite the sisterly shine to this girl.  As Ariel matured, this would turn into more of a motherly shine - she was more hesitant to meet with the knights of the other gods.  She'd have to fight them, wouldn't she?  What would be the point of befriending them if she'd end up fighting them anyways.  

Well, after becoming very lonely staying in Jesturma's training grounds, she ventured into the Cookie Room, and immediately started making friends.  Her naturally friendly personality helped with this, and she found herself glad to be part of this group of knights.  

However, Ariel soon became the object of surprise romantic attentions.  Back in Atlantica, she had been a bit of a late bloomer, and the combination of her frightening father and that god she spent almost 24/7 with scared any interested merboys away.  So she suddenly found herself in an environment where the "interested boys" weren't so scared, and she had no clue that they were interested.  

And one of those interested boys happened to be Jesturma.  

Now, Ariel found out about this, because of a dream that Jesturma sent her that was very sensual and pushed Ariel's mind in a direction that she didn't know it could go.  She was left confused, flustured, and unsure of how to deal with the situation.  She eventually decided to run and hide whenever Jesturma was around because she was too embarrassed, and a little frightened.  She remembered what happened to Odette, and she was sincerely hoping that story wouldn't repeat itself.  

It also didn't help that she was very susceptible to love potions.

The first was Ashitaka, who was one of the interested boys.  This love potion Ariel took willingly, because he needed the tears of a mermaid who was in love with him to help lift his curse.  By the time she'd taken the love potion, she'd already started to develop feelings for Jesturma, and so the mere mention of his name gave her killer migraines.  This helped the rest of the Cookie Room occupants discover the flaw of love potions - they couldn't suppress true love.  

After Ariel was given the antidote, she soon discovered that Mowgli - a little boy who followed her friend Rapunzel into the Common Room - had developed a crush on her.  She discovered this because he'd taken an aging potion in the hopes that he could win her over.

He didn't, and Ariel was forced to turn him down.  This led to a lot of drama, but Ariel thought she'd fixed the issue, so she ignored it all.  

Now, at around this time Cale - a Knight of Falia - switched sides, and became a Knight of Jesturma.  Ariel was already great friends with Cale, so she was fine with that.  But he had grown to respect Jesturma, and so played wing-man for him, and started giving him tips on how to woo Ariel.  As a result, all the Water Knights were taken on a field trip to the outskirts of Atlantica.  Everyone stood back to allow Ariel and Jesturma to bond, and though the moment was progressing nicely, it was unfortunately ruined by Alice coming across a baby mako shark.  

Though the moment was ruined, Jesturma still bestowed gifts upon each of the knights.  Ariel only asked for her mother's music box to be returned to her.  Jesturma complied, but discovered that the music box was in fact a family heirloom, and that it was infused with god magic.  It could see the true contents of any person's soul.  It was this way that Ariel discovered she was descended of one of the previous Water Gods.  

Everything seemed to be going well, but Mowgli apparently still harbored feelings for Ariel, so he did little to stop those mysterious Voices when he was turned into a teenager and Ariel was put under a love potion with him.  She was eventually broken out of this love potion by Kimba, an albino lion whose human form looked a lot like Jesturma's.  

But things didn't end here, the "Evil Teenage" version of Mowgli still resided in his brain, and tried to coerce Ariel into having sexual relations with him in return for Mowgli's well being.  She called upon Jesturma instead, and he saved Mowgli.  

It was then that Ariel confessed to Jesturma her feelings for him.  Much to the relief of everyone in the Cookie Room.  

But this happiness wasn't to last.  On the night of the Fairy Ball - which Jesturma had invited Ariel to - the god discovered that Ariel had been replaced with a clone of sorts by Macalli, who was told of Jesturma's love for Ariel by Kida in exchange for her mother.  This prompted a group of knights to venture into Macalli's realm to rescue Ariel.  The mission was a success, but at that moment Ariel knew the happiness she had previously felt would come to an end.

Jesturma had grown distant from her since the incident, and she feared he would sever ties with her for her own protection.  But instead she came to the Cookie Room to discover that Jesturma had been killed by Eris.  

Ariel was thrown into a state of grief, hurt and confused by Jesturma's death and convinced that if she had been at the Cookie Room the night before she could have done something to save him.  

Everything after that was a bit of a blur for Ariel.  She grew more cynical, more somber, and more tough.  She was insistent on winning the war in honor of Jesturma's memory, especially considering she didn't trust any of the other gods - Dali was sketchy, Macalli kidnapped her, and Falia had an evil twin.  Plus, there was something about the new water goddess - Nadiee - that made Ariel trust her.

She soon found out why.  After wandering through Gaia's garden, Ariel overheard a conversation between Eris and Nadiee revealing that Nadiee was Jesturma's sister, and that if Nadiee won the war, Jesturma would be brought back to life as a human.  

Well, now Ariel was determined to win the war.  Winning this would save Jesturma's life, whereas nothing of the sort would come out of the other gods winning.  

Then her friends started dropping like flies.  Winning the war meant killing the knights on all the other teams, so only the knights of one god remained.  No matter how much she loved Jesturma, Ariel couldn't bring herself to kill her friends for him.  After many switching of alliances, Ariel finally came up with a plan.

She met with the remaining knights, and convinced them that the best way to end the war was for all of them to switch to one god's side.  There was some argument on who to do that for - Dimitri and Cale were stuck with Macalli, due to the fact that he brought Cale back to life, Rapunzel was hesitant to stray from Falia, and Ariel was adamant on Nadiee for Jesturma's sake - but eventually they settled on Macalli.  The god was touched by their choice of him, and in reward he brought Jesturma back before becoming Gaian.  Jesturma was revived, and horrified that they had chosen Macalli.  Earlier on, the ghost of Jesturma had tried to warn Ariel about someone amongst the gods, but the message had been muddled.  Well, he was warning her about Macalli, and as soon as the knights had been switched to him, he revealed that he would abuse his powers as Gaian to get back at the world for all his years of losing.  

The rest of the knights sprung into action, and won the fight, transferring the power of Gaian to Jesturma instead of Macalli.  As punishment for Macalli's treason, Jesturma had him reborn as a human without knowledge of his years as a god.  

And thus the war came to a close.  Jesturma asked Ariel to join him as his Gaia, and though Ariel wasn't fond of the idea of immortality, she still said yes.  This was due to the pain that losing Jesturma had caused her, and the knowledge that he may one day become like Eris - and she would never subject him to that - and the hope that she and Jesturma could make things easier for the knights to come.  

And though things were rocky with Ariel and Rapunzel (her best friend during her days as a knight), those problems were fixed, and Ariel has lived out her life quite happily.
